γ-Butyrolactone (GBL) is an importantchemical intermediate, widely used in pharmaceutical, food, textile and otherindustrial fields. It can be used as the main raw material for the productionof 1,4-butanediol (BDO), tetrahydrofuran (THF), pyrrolidone derivatives,herbicides and rubber additives. Among them, the high solubility andelectrolytic properties of pyrrolidone make it useful in lithium batteryelectrolytes, and more than 50% of GBL consumption is used for the synthesis ofpyrrolidone products.
Currently,industrial production is mainly based on two routes:
1,4-Butanediol(BDO) dehydrogenation method: It accounts for the mainstream process (more than70%). BDO is dehydrogenated and cyclized at 230–240°C under the action of acopper-based catalyst, with a conversion rate of ＞98% and a high productpurity (≥99.5%).
Maleicanhydride hydrogenation method: Maleic anhydride is used as raw material, andafter vaporization, it reacts with hydrogen under a copper catalyst to produceGBL, with tetrahydrofuran (THF) as a by-product. The product ratio can becontrolled by adjusting the conditions.
Atpresent, the global GBL production capacity is mainly concentrated in China,Europe and South Korea. Among them, China is the largest producer and consumer,occupying a dominant position in global production capacity. Europe and SouthKorea are mainly based on mature technology and high-end uses, and theirproducts are mostly used in electronic materials and pharmaceutical synthesis.With the growing global demand for green solvents and high-performanceintermediates, many companies are also actively expanding GBL productioncapacity and extending to the downstream of the industrial chain.
